Emilio Gallegos is the Assistant Principal of a school in Moreno Valley,
California. He is a very dear friend of mine and has been involved with
Parenting With Dignity for many years. His is the voice behind the
Spanish interpretation on our DVDs and he also translated our parents
workbook. When we asked him if he would be interested in translating this
website, he jumped at the opportunity even though I knew he already had many
things on his plate. The letter below is from Emilio.
Dear Parents,
I became a father at
the young age of 20, and the very first time I set eyes on my son I knew
that I wanted to be the best dad a son could have. I immediately enrolled
in child development courses and bought parenting books that talked about
the awesome role of being a parent. I wanted to be a different father
than my own dad. My dad was a great man, but worked many hours and had
little time to spend with my brothers and me. My dad was by my side,
however, on one of the most important days of my life, my commencement
ceremony at the University of Southern California. It was here where my
career as an educator took off.
Being in the field of education for 15 years, it
has been my goal to bring practical and positive parenting tools to our
parents and community. In researching some parenting courses to
implement, I came across Parenting with Dignity. I immediately identified
with this course due to the practical and down to earth approach in which
it was introduced via VHS video cassettes. The other thing that was of
special interest to me was the Parent's Workbook. This tool serves as an
accountability manual for parents when implementing some of the many ideas
Mac and Barbara Bledsoe teach in this program.
Parenting with Dignity is a program designed
primarily to change the parent-child relationship in a positive and
constructive way. It deals with many of the root issues that make
parenting so challenging. To begin with, Mac Bledsoe defines the impact
that ideas have in our children, and how once set in their minds, these
ideas can bring about positive or negative consequences, depending on the
idea itself. Mr. & Mrs. Bledsoe also speak on the "language of love" and
the messages that our children receive at home. They provide parents with
easy to use tools in sending strong messages of love through a myriad of
ways, including: saying it, writing it, making it, playing...etc.
One the most important aspects of Parenting with
Dignity is the parent forum. Through small group collaboration, parents
share personal child rearing situations and brainstorm the implementations
of the tools offered in the program. This gives way to meaningful
dialogue in order to learn a variety of constructive and productive
techniques to deal with specific scenarios. Some comments shared with us
by parents include the following:
